Guided by the University's pursuit of research excellence and relevance, the Library and Information Service provides a variety of services to support postgraduate students, academic staff, researchers and postdoctoral students at each stage of the research lifecycle. Some focus areas ensure access to the best possible academic sources, facilitating scholarly communication and promoting research output. <br><br><h2>Services<br></h2>We strive to provide spaces conducive to research and efficient service delivery by experienced staff. The <a href="/en-za/Research/rc/Pages/default.aspx">Carnegie Research Commons</a> brings together people, technology, and information resources to enhance research activity. Individual workspaces, discussion areas and a comfortable area are provided for relaxation and networking.<br><br> You will find information about bibliometrics, citation analysis, unique author identification (<a href="http://orcid.org/" target="_blank">ORCID</a>) and assistance with increasing your visibility as a researcher under the link <a href="/en-za/Research/Pages/Research-impact.aspx">Research Impact</a>. Under <a href="/en-za/Research/Pages/research-data-management.aspx">Research Data Management</a> you will find some guidelines about how to plan and manage your research data as well as where to deposit it. The page <a href="/en-za/Research/Pages/Bibliographic-reference-management.aspx">Bibliographic reference management</a> gives you more information about how to manage your references with tools such as <a href="http://www.mendeley.com/" target="_blank">Mendeley</a>. You will also find links to information about <a href="http://libguides.sun.ac.za/content.php?pid=698324" target="_blank">referencing</a> in general.<br><br><a href="/en-za/Research/oa/Pages/default.aspx">Open Access</a> benefits researchers by providing inexpensive access to scholarly material, and authors by providing global exposure and more opportunity to be cited. The University's Open Acces endeavours are all listed under this link, such as our institutional repository (SUNScholar), SUNJournals, SUNConferences, the Open Access Publication Fund and Self-archiving.<br><div><br>Two other important services are <a href="http://digital.lib.sun.ac.za/">Special collections</a> and <a href="http://digital.lib.sun.ac.za/">Digital collections</a> which make valuable unique material available to researchers, such as manuscripts, maps, rare books, architectural drawings and other forms of material.<br><br>A varied <a href="/en-za/Learning/Pages/training-postgrads.aspx">training programme</a> for postgraduate students and researchers is presented throughout the year to assist you in making use of the information services and discovery tools as well as to enhance research productivity.
