FREDERICK VAN ZYL SLABBERT COLLECTION     Sien Afrikaans onder

The Library and Information Service is now officially the custodian of the Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert manuscript collection. The Manuscripts Section in the JS Gericke Library received this unique documentary heritage in April this year. The good news was announced at the third annual Van Zyl Slabbert honorary lecture which is held annually by the Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert Institute for Student Leadership Development.

The collection consists mainly of correspondence, speeches, articles, manuscripts and diaries of Van Zyl Slabbert. Staff members are currently sorting the collection and a complete catalogue and index to the collection will eventually be compiled. Possible future digitisation of the collection, in order to make it accessible to a wider research community, will also be considered.

The Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert collection is a very important addition to collections currently held by the Manuscripts Section. These collections include South African political and socio-economical history as major focus areas. According to Ms. Ellen Tise, Senior Director: Library and Information Service “the real value of the collection, however, lies in the fact that it is, in essence, someone’s life on paper. A very extraordinary someone in this case - his thoughts on paper, what he stood for in his time. Providing access to these thoughts and life can spark new thinking, give rise to new research, which could ultimately have an effect on our society today and in future”.
