PATRON-DRIVEN ACQUISITIONS FOR E-BOOKS    Sien Afrikaans onder

There is a new buzz word in the world of library e-book acquisitions, namely patron-driven acquisitions, PDA for short. In some environments it is known as demand-driven acquisitions (DDA). In 2014, Stellenbosch University Library and Information Service decided to find out what the buzz is all about, if it is something that could work for us.

According to Wikipedia, patron-driven acquisition “is a model of library collection development in which a library only purchases digital content, like e-books and e-journals, when it is clear that a patron wants them.” This would generally mean that an e-book supplier provides a library with temporary access to a selection of e-books. Patrons can access these e-books via the library’s catalogue and when certain thresholds are reached for an item (e.g., number of pages read or number of requests), the library purchases the item.

Although many companies offer a PDA model, the product of choice for SU LIS’s first PDA agreement was EBL, an aggregated e-book product with nine years’ experience of supplying e-books under PDA agreements to libraries. According to our agreement with EBL, the catalogue records of about 25 000 pre-selected e-books were loaded into the library’s catalogue and have been accessible to SU patrons since the middle of May. Every book is allowed up to three short-term loans (STLs) of 24 hours each, costing the Library a percentage of the book’s price per loan. After the third STL, the book is purchased. A system of mediated purchases makes it possible for the Library to intervene at certain stages of the process.

KLIëNT-GEDREWE AANWINSTE VIR E-BOEKE
