Seminar room for students with special needs

In May this year Ms Tise, Senior Director: Library and Information Service, received a request from Ms Marcia Lyner-Cleophas, Head of the Disability Unit, regarding the possibility of the JS Gericke Library providing a study room for students with special needs. Students with ‘special needs’ require a completely quiet room for study as they may suffer, for example, from an anxiety disorder.

Special needs students have cited that residences, the study centre and the library are too noisy an environment in which to study.

A meeting was held on 12 May at the Centre for Student Counselling and Development and was attended by amongst others, Ms Reinet Faasen from the library, as well as a special needs student.

As a result of the meeting the JS Gericke Library has made seminar room 2054 available to students with special needs. These students inform the library at least one week in advance of when they will need the room. It is then booked out to them for as long as it is needed. At other times the room will be available to all students needing a room for group study. The key to the room is kept at Short Loans. It is given to the first student who arrives in the morning to use the room. The last one to leave returns the key to the lending desk.
