Research support and the Research Commons

Research Support services are expanding rapidly at the Library, especially after the opening of the Carnegie Research Commons in 2011. This facility is equipped with computers, workstations and seminar rooms, a video-conferencing facility as well as areas for discussion and relaxation. The main aim of the Research Commons is to enhance the Library's contribution to postgraduate through-put and research output by providing a conducive environment for researchers, and offering services which directly support research endeavours of postgraduate students and researchers.

Two permanent staff members are situated in the Research Commons. Marié Roux  is the Manager: Research Support and Research Commons, a position she helds from October 2014. In her previous position as Librarian: Research Support, she was also situated in the Research Commons, from January 2011 - September 2014. Before that she was responsible for Quality Assurance and Management Information of the Library and Information Service. Marié helds an Honours degree in Library and Information Science and a MA degree in Afrikaans and Dutch Literature, both received from Stellenbosch University.

Mymoena Londt was appointed as Librarian: Research Support and Research Commons from 1 April 2015. She completed her undergraduate and honnours degrees in Library and Information Science at the University of Western Cape. Her first position as a librarian was as Library Assistant at SANS Fibres. She then moved to the Education Policy Unit (EPU) where she was appointed as an Assistant Librarian. In 2004 she started to work at UWC's Main Library as the Multimedia Librarian and her love for technology within Library and Information Science started to grow while being in this position. Later she was appointed as Digital and Communications Librarian at UWC. She is currently busy with her Masters level degree in Information Technology (M.IT) offered by the Department of Information Science at the University of Pretoria, funded by the Carnegie Foundation.

Six student assistants delivers a peer-to-peer service in the Research Commons, handling the basic enquiries, helping with IT trouble shooting and some administrative tasks. Librarians and student assistants assist clients with referencing techniques; reference managers such a RefWorks and Mendeley; advanced formatting in Microsoft Word; plagiarism; and any other research related enquiries clients might have. Subject related enquiries usualy will be referred to the specific faculty librarian.

The Writing Lab of the Language Centre presents consultations in the Research Commons on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which contribute to the aim of a holistic service to the clients of the Research Commons. Clients are welcome to book for these sessions in the Research Commons.

The division of Research Support also offers Research Commons Workshops. Examples of workshops in this series includes "An overview and comparison of free reference managers"; "Tools and applications for research" and "Your research footprint". Please consult the Training and Events Calendar for a full programme of workshops presented by the Library.

The Carnegie Research Commons presents regular Social Hours on a Friday afternoon with established researchers as guest speakers. The next one will be presented as part of Library Research Week on Friday 15 May, 15:30-16:30. Please register here if you wish to attend.
