OUR FIRST DIGITAL FAIR!                                             Sien Afrikaans onder

The first Library Digital Fair took place on Friday 25 July. The aim of the fair was to introduce Stellenbosch University students and staff to the cutting-edge electronic resources that are available to them via the Library, whether it is on or off campus.

The Digital Fair had three components. Firstly, in the electronic classroom of the JS Gericke Library,  Library staff introduced various electronic sources, services as well as and facilities which can enhance students and staff’s research, teaching and learning. Examples of these are: JoVE, the world’s first peer-reviewed video journal;video conferencing with Polycom and Virtual Meeting Rooms; digital conference management and the classroom management software, SyncTeacher.

Secondly, there was the “fair” itself, which consisted of kiosks and displays which students and staff could visit throughout the day. Vendors such as Elsevier (ScienceDirect and Scopus), Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), InetBFA, Ebsco, LexisNexis and Juta had stalls where they showcased access to and use of their databases, e-journals and e-books on mobile devices. Vendor representatives  had a busy day  answering  student and staff questions.

The Library undertook a mobile website survey as part of a web usability study, which also took place during the Digital Fair. A surprising total of 149 respondents completed the survey.

Students and staff who visited the kiosks received a voucher for a free coffee and doughnut at DCM in the Neelsie Student Centre. A lucky draw took place with a number of prizes up for grabs. Rufina Chukwmalume won a R250 voucher from Protea Bookshop, Thala Msutu a R250 voucher for Java Café, Alexander Lotz a R250 voucher for JayJays and Kay-Lee Lewis a R250 voucher for Birdcage.

All in all the first Library Digital Fair was a definite success and the Library and Information Service would like to build on it in future.
