December 2014

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2014

As previous years, 2014 was also an exciting and successful year for the Library and Information Service. As we are nearing the end of the year and are preparing to take a well-deserved break, let me share with you some of the highlights of the year.

In March the completed catalogues of the collections of celebrated Afrikaans authors Hennie Aucamp and Lina Spies were presented at a prestigious function in the Africana room of the JS Gericke Library.

In April the Library and Information Service became officially the custodian of the Frederick Van Zyl Slabbert manuscript collection. The good news was announced at the third Van Zyl Slabbert Honorary Lecture which is held annually by the Frederick Van Zyl Slabbert Institute for Student Leadership Development.

The popular Research Commons Social Hours started again in May with a talk by Dr Nox Makunga (Science Faculty). The title of her talk was From rural lands to wine lands … a personal account of a medicinal plant scientist. She was followed by Prof Linus Opara in August who presented a talk on Building a multi-disciplinary research career – experiences of an engineer among agriculturists. Lastly, Prof Jacques du Plessis (Law Faculty) presented a talk on The Roads of Research in October. Read more about his talk in this issue.

In July the Library successfully hosted its first Digital Fair. The aim of the Fair was to introduce Stellenbosch University students and staff to the cutting-edge electronic resources that are available to them via the Library – on and off campus. There were various kiosks and demonstrations by publishers and library staff on how to access databases, e-journals, e-books etc. throughout the day. The event was well received and we hope to present it again in 2015.

In August our second Library Research Week was held. The aim of this event is to develop skills and knowledge of emerging Stellenbosch University researchers and students.  Library Research Week is now an established event on our annual Library calendar and we feel that we have succeeded in making it an event which grabs the attention of our target audience Compared to 2013 more users were reached this year. Attendance of specific sessions as well as feedback received and levels of engagement from attendees indicate that we have succeeded in addressing topics relevant to our students and researchers.

We look forward to another exciting year in 2015 and endeavour to continue developing dynamic and innovative services which will enhance and add value to the academic project of the University.  On behalf of all library staff, we wish everyone a happy festive season and a prosperous 2015!

Until next year.

Ellen R. Tise
Senior Director, Library and Information Services
