LINA SPIES AND HENNIE AUCAMP COLLECTIONS Sien Afrikaans onder

The completed catalogues of the collections of celebrated Afrikaans authors Hennie Aucamp and Lina Spies were presented on 5 March 2014 at a prestigious function in the Africana room, JS Gericke Library.

Spies and Aucamp donated their respective collections of manuscripts and personal documents, including correspondence, diaries, speeches, lectures, articles, reviews and photographs to the Manuscripts Section of Special Collections several years ago and have been adding to these collections ever since. These materials have now been carefully sorted, described and indexed by the Manuscripts Section.

Both authors are champions for the preservation of the Afrikaans language. Lynne Fourie, who compiled the Spies catalogue, noted at the event that when working with Lina Spies’s documents, she was moved by her empathy with the Jewish nation and her love of cats. Important correspondence regarding Spies’s translation of the Diary of Anne Frank have also been included in the collection.

Marina Brink, who compiled the Hennie Aucamp catalogue, mentioned that as a student Aucamp came across a quote from Olive Schreiner, which became part of his philosophy of life: “It never pays the man who speaks the truth, but it pays humanity that it should be spoken”. When he thus saw something amiss in the spirit of a group or a country, he would find no rest before writing an article or letter to the press on the matter. Hennie Aucamp’s pioneering work on Afrikaans cabaret also forms part of his collection.

After both authors had the opportunity to reply and to deliver a vote of thanks, there was time to relax and view an exhibition of highlights from both collections.
Prof Lina Spies featured again on 7 March 2014 when she delivered the fifth annual Manuscripts Lecture as part of the Stellenbosch Woordfees programme. The lecture was entitled: “Sonder woorde en musiek is die hemel hel”, a line from her poem “Oor Mozart en manuskripte”, published in Oorstaanson. Spies reflected on the big influence which authors DJ Opperman and Emily Dickinson and composers such as Mozart and Mendelsohn had on her life. The lecture was followed by the viewing of an exhibition of manuscripts from the Lina Spies collection in the Manuscripts Section.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Hennie Aucamp which followed shortly after the presentation of his catalogued collection. We are however grateful to have had the honour to collect and describe his collection of manuscripts and personal documents.  It is also a priviledge to now be able to make it available to researchers interested in studying his particularly valuable contribution to South African literature.- Ed.

Aucamp het aldus Marina Brink, opsteller van sy katalogus, as student kennis gemaak met ’n reël van Olive Schreiner: “It never pays the man who speaks the truth, but it pays humanity that it should be spoken” wat deel van sy lewensfilosofie geword het.
