SUBJECT GUIDES - LIBRARIANS' VIRTUAL PRESENCE
                                                                                                           Sien Afrikaans onder

Subject guides (or Libguides as we call them) are created by Faculty Librarians for each department to promote subject-specific resources to the students. A number of generic guides are also available.

The subject guides include information on books and journals, listings of databases, webpages and other information and resources that might be relevant to the student’s area of study. It is a useful space to promote new databases and electronic reference works in a specific subject field. The guides can also be used by fellow librarians and student assistants if they need to answer subject-related queries when the faculty librarian for a specific subject is not available.

The second type of libguide is of a more generic nature. The most visited guide in this group is How do I find, access and use information effectively: A step-by-step guide. The aim of this guide is to help undergraduate students find information for their assignments and to use the information effectively and responsibly. Attention is also given to the different referencing styles. This guide has already been viewed 20 194 times this year. Some of the other popular generic guides are User guide for postgraduates and researchers, Google and Google Scholar, and Directory of South African Music Collections.

Why did we choose LibGuides? LibGuides is a Springshare web 2.0 library knowledge sharing system. It is easy to use and content can be added/edited instantly. No technical expertise is required and it links easily to different formats of information. The look and feel of all the guides are uniform and consistent to create a professional image, but it does give the librarians room for a little bit of creativity as well. It provides up-to-date user statistics which can be an indication of what is essential and most used in a specific guide. The Library is in the third year of using this very successful tool.

Die mees besoekte vakgids in hierdie groep is How do I find, access and use information effectively: A step-by-step guide.
