The Library Service acquired 28 electronic books that are now available 24/7 via the University network from the information solutions company, Gale.

Although the Library Service has for some time now provided access to electronic books, the Gale e-books are the first that were purchased individually and that can be downloaded onto the Library Service's local computer server.

The newly acquired e-books cover a variety of content: multi-volume encyclopedias, biographical collections, business plan handbooks, consumer health references and specialised reference sources covering a diversity of subjects including arts, biography, business, education, environment, history, law, literature, medicine, multicultural studies, nation & world, religion, science and social science.

The e-books are included in the Library Service catalogue and are also available via the Library Service's website at www.sun.ac.za/library. This webpage offers access to the complete collection of Gale e-books as well as to individual titles.  Other collections of e-books are also listed on the webpage.

A number of the services that accompany the Gale e-books are:

• Basic and advanced search options
• The ability to search through the complete collection of Gale e-books
• Limiting of searches to a specific source (e.g. Encyclopaedia of Education)
• Hyperlinked tables of contents and indexes
• Cross reference hyperlinks
• E-mail and printing options
• Retrieval of PDF files of the original print copy
• Bibliographic citations for articles and for each e-book
