As previous years, 2014 was also an exciting and successful year for the Library and Information Service. As we are nearing the end of the year and are preparing to take a well-deserved break, let me share with you some of the highlights of the year.
In March the completed catalogues of the collections of celebrated Afrikaans authors Hennie Aucamp and Lina Spies were presented and in April the Library became officially the custodian of the Frederick Van Zyl Slabbert manuscript collection.The popular Research Commons Social Hours started again in May with a talk by Dr Nox Makunga (Science Faculty).
In July the Library successfully hosted its first Digital Fair. The aim of the Fair was to introduce Stellenbosch University students and staff to the cutting-edge electronic resources that are available to them via the Library. In August we presented a successful second Library Research Week.

OUR FIRST DIGITAL FAIR!
The Library and Information Services first Library Digital Fair took place on Friday 25 July. The aim of the fair was to introduce students and staff to the cutting-edge electronic resources that are available to them.

LIBRARY RESEARCH WEEK 2014
We hosted our second Library Research Week this year from 4-8 August with the theme Get Research SMART @ your Library. A programme was developed with four focus areas identified by library staff.

NEW APPOINTMENTS
During the past few months three new appointments have been made at the Library and Information Service. Paulette Taillard and Marie Roux were appointed in new positions and we welcomed Samuel Simango as a new staff member.
RESEARCH COMMONS SOCIAL HOUR - JACQUES DU PLESSIS
The Library hosted another very successful Research Commons Social Hour, with Prof Jacques du Plessis of the Law Faculty as the guest speaker. He held an inspirational talk with the topic The Roads of Research.

RARE TREASURES IN DIGITAL COLLECTIONS
Two treasures which have recently been digitised and made available on SUNDigital Collections are the handwritten memoirs of a Scottish missionary (nineteenth century) and a handwritten Dutch ships journal from the eighteenth century.
