The Library and Information
Service hosted its second Library Research Week in
August this year with the theme “Get Research SMART @ your Library”. A programme
was developed with four focus areas which have been identified by taking
into account the experience and observations on user behaviour by
library staff, as well as recent publications on users’ needs in
academic libraries:
-
Reference and citation management:
MANAGE IT! Learn to manage references and citations effectively with
the help of various reference management tools.
-
Academic writing: WRITE IT!
Elsevier author seminar looking at the scholarly publishing
landscape and producing a high quality scientific article.
-
Finding relevant information:
FIND IT! Improving your literature search strategy and
distinguishing between trustworthy vs. untrustworthy information.
-
Managing research: CONTROL IT!
How peers use innovative tools and applications to manage aspects of
their research.
One of the highlights of the week was the
CONTROL IT! session, focusing on managing research. With this focus area
we wanted to employ peer to peer presentation and launched a competition
where we invited students and researchers to share innovative tools and
applications they use to manage their research. Gerhard Roux, lecturer
in Music technology, was the presenter with the best presentation voted
for on the day and received a prize of an Apple iPad, sponsored by
Elsevier. The peer presentations were preceded by an inspiring lecture
by Prof Jannie Hofmeyr on his personal research journey and the tools he
employs to manage and balance his research and his life.
The second Carnegie Research Commons
Social Hour of 2014 formed part of Library Research Week. Guest speaker,
Prof Linus Opara of the Department of Horticultural Science, presented a
talk entitled “Building a multi-disciplinary research career:
experiences of an engineer among agriculturists” where he shared his
experiences as a researcher.

BIBLIOTEEKNAVORSINGSWEEK 2014
SMART @ your Library” aangebied.
-
Vind relevante inligting: KRY
DIT! Verbeter jou literatuursoekstrategie en onderskei tussen
geloofwaardige en ongeloofwaardige inligting.
-
Bestuur navorsing: WEES IN
BEHEER!
gefokus is.
Gerhard Roux, ‘n dosent in Musiektegnologie, se
aanbieding “Building a multi-disciplinary research career: experiences
of an engineer among agriculturists”.
