​​​The cost of information: Who Pays the Ferryman?

Academic libraries have become expensive entities and authorities struggle to provide the necessary funding to maintain balanced and up-to-date library collections. The fluctuating value of the South African monetary unit, price increases and the format in which electronic full-text information is being packaged and offered to libraries by publishers, all contribute to the problem.

Library cooperation in obtaining national site licenses still has a long way to go and does not provide significant financial relief. At this symposium these issues, as well as alternatives for traditional scientific publishing, will be discussed by experts in the field of library management, by suppliers and by publishers.

Librarians and information professionals, educators and publishers are invited to attend this symposium and to bring their own views, questions and contributions to the discussion table.
