Sixth Manuscripts
Section Lecture: Winnie Rust

Afrikaans onder
The sixth Manuscripts Section Lecture was
presented during the Wordfest on 6 March this year by author Winnie
Rust.
Winnie Rust is the author of among other books Martha, the tale of
Martha Solomons, the Countess of Stamford and Trek, the story of the
forced removals of Coloured people from central Wellington and the
consequent impact on the community. Suzette Kotzé-Myburgh, freelance
translator and proof-reader, posed questions to the author on her life
and wirting career. Rust for example answered the question on why her
work revolves so closely around the town of Wellington by referring to
Boerneef, well-known Afrikaans author and her father’s brother. Boerneef claimed that he never would have
written had he not grown up on Boplaas and had been so deep-rooted in
his environment. Rust also collects her material for her writing from
her environment where her roots are, but at the same time strives for
her work to have universal appeal.
The title of the lecture, which translates to “Footsteps of women
through my town”, was selected because all the main characters in Rust’s
books thus far reflect the life stories of remarkable women of
Wellington.
The lecture was moved to the library staff room at the last minute, nut
this beautiful new
venue was, however, very popular with the audience and could be
considered for future Manuscript Section Lectures. The event was
attended by an audience of around 60 guests, including the author’s
children and grandchildren.

Vrouespore deur my dorp:
Winnie Rust
geanker was nie.
lesing miskien voortaan elke jaar daar moet plaasvind. Die geleentheid
is bygewoon deur ongeveer sestig belangstellendes, insluitende Rust se
kinders en kleinkinders.
