Introducing new staff at Special Collections
Two new staff members have been appointed at the Library Service's Special Collections for specific projects after additional funding from sponsors was procured.
Anneke Schaafsma holds an Honours B.Bibl degree from the US. She was trained in hand bookbinding and paper restoration at the “Centro de bel libro” in Ascona, Switzerland and the “Institut für Restaurierung” of the National Library in Vienna, Austria. She was appointed in this capacity at both the Library of Parliament and UCT’s Jagger Library in Cape Town. She also worked as a librarian at the Teachers’ College in Graaff-Reinet and the Library of Parliament. She was appointed in the Manuscripts division of Special Collections and is currently involved with the ordering of the valuable collection of the Institute for Soviet Studies, a former research institute at the US.
Stephanus Muller holds a doctorate in Musicology from the University of Oxford. He lectures part-time at the University of the Free State and regularly contributes articles on music and musicians to journals and newspapers locally and abroad. Dr Muller was appointed to order and catalogue the collection of the South African composer, the late Arnold van Wyk. The aim of the project is to make the highly technical documents more accessible to researchers and will take approximately a year to complete.
