Exquisite bookbinding on exhibition
Examples of hand- and machine-bound books from Special Collections can currently be seen in the two display cabinets just outside the section. Bindings in parchment and leather, as well as in cloth and paper are on display.
The oldest book exhibited, a flexible parchment binding with a handwritten title, was printed in 1581, although the binding dates from a later period. The most recent-bound book on show dates from 1992 and is bound in wooden boards with inlay work by Bruce Attwood.
The exhibition was prepared by Anneke Schaafsma.
