Welcoming for newcomers disappoints
Only 459 students participated in this year’s welcoming programme for newcomers presented at the JS Gericke Library between 2 and 6 February.
Most of the participating newcomers were private students while hostel students were in the minority.
The poor attendance figures are contributed mainly to the fact that attendance of welcoming opportunities is no longer compulsory.
The graph (right) shows the attendance figure per faculty in relation to the registration numbers available at the time.
The Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences traditionally does not take part in the welcoming week due to large student numbers and is therefore not included in the graph. Alternative measures are however being taken to provide these students with the necessary library orientation.
The low attendance figures are naturally distressing in terms of empowerment, information literacy and lifelong learning and the Library Service, with other associates on campus, will seek to find other means to provide the necessary library orientation.
