Open source software available at JS Gericke Library
A Freedom Toaster sponsored by the Shuttleworth Foundation has been placed in the JS Gericke Library (next to the Interlending section) for clients to obtain free open source software. The unit exists of a selfcontained "Bring 'n Burn" facility, where clients bring their own blank CD's to make copies of the software they require. The Freedom Toaster offers OpenOffice as well as Linux software.
The unit is very easy to use. By means of a touch-screen you choose which software you want. More information about the software you selected, will appear on the screen, as well as an indication of how many CD's you will need to download the software. Furthermore the Freedom Toaster hosts on-screen information to educate the public about the world of free and open software.
Clients of the Library Service are encouraged to use this free facility. For more information please visit the webpage at www.freedomtoaster.org.
