Library symposium on quality assurance

The US Library Service proudly host a topical symposium with national and international speakers annually. The Seventh Annual Library Symposium will be held on 28-29 October 2004 in the auditorium of the JS Gericke Library. The theme of this year's symposium is quality assurance, a key issue for today's libraries in all sectors. All tertiary institutions in South Africa face quality performance audits, performed by the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC), and their libraries form an integral part of this process.

The programme will include contributions by experts in the field from South Africa, Australia, the UK and the USA, e.g. Dr Karin de Jager (UCT), Ms Joyce Gozo (Vaal University of Technology), Dr Prem Naidoo (HEQC), Prof Jan Botha (US), Prof Peter Hernon (Simmons College, Boston, USA), Dr Martin Carroll (Australian Universities Quality Agency, Melbourne, Australia) and Mr Stephen Town (Cranfield University, UK). Prof Russel Botman, Vice Rector (Teaching) will welcome the delegates to the symposium.

The symposium will be divided into three sections: "Perspectives from higher education quality assurance", "Perspectives from academic library practitioners" and "Measuring as a dimension of quality assessment at academic libraries". In the last section Prof Bruce Thompson from the USA will present a paper on the LibQUAL+(TM) client satisfaction measurement system.

To view the full programme and other information about the symposium, please visit the conference website.

If you have any queries, please contact Johan Engelbrecht at tel.: 808-4878 or e-mail: jpe@sun.ac.za.
