Benefits of
self-archiving of research output

Stellenbosch University Council officially
approved the institutional policy on the mandatory self-archiving of
research output in December last year. The Library and Information
service is the curator of this policy.
Self-archiving refers to the practice of
scholars depositing copies of their peer-reviewed research articles or
conference proceedings to an institutional repository (SUNScholar in our
case) or other open electronic archive. This practice has become widely
accepted in the Open Access research community over the last few years
with more and more universities adopting self-archiving policies in
order to encourage participation in Open Access, to grow the content of
their institutional repositories and to increase the visibility of the
institution’s research output.
According to The Registry of Open Access
Repositories Mandatory Archiving Policies (ROARMAP),
a searchable international registry charting the growth of open access
mandates adopted by universities, 477 universities worldwide have
adopted self-archiving policies to date.
SPARC Europe, a foundation with the mission to create change and
build a better scholarly communication system for the future, documents
the benefits of self-archiving for individuals and institutions as
follows:
Benefits for the individual:
-
Research papers that are freely
available online are on average better visible and used more often
than those that are not.
-
Regular submission of an author's work
to a repository provides an author with a central archive of their
work and a record of publication to add to their CV.
Benefits for the institution:
-
Establishing an institutional
repository enables a university to publicise its research and
teaching programmes by enabling access to the work of its staff and
students.
-
The academic work of an institution
can be presented in one place rather than spread amongst hundreds of
journals, so increasing visibility and prestige.
-
The quality of a university's academic
output forms an effective advertisement for the institution,
attracting external revenue streams, new faculty, and students.
-
Deposit in a university repository can
also ease - both for the institution and for the academic author -
the administrative burden of reporting publications for research
assessment and review exercised.
The proven benefits and the growth and
acceptance of the practice world-wide, should encourage more and more
scholars to make their research output freely available to the widest
possible audience via the self-archiving process. Here at SU, the
process is facilitated by the Library and Information Service through
SUNScholar, our institutional repository. For further information on the
process and the policy, please refer to the Library’s
webpage on Open Access.

Voordele van die selfargivering van
navorsingsuitsette
ewekniebeoordeelde navorsingsartikels of konferensiereferate in ‘n
instiutionele bewaarplek (SUNScholar in ons geval) of ‘n ander oop
elektroniese argief deponeer.
as volg:
Voordele vir die individu:
-
-
institusionele bewaarplek.
