OCLC EMEA MEETING HELD
IN CAPE TOWN
Sien Afrikaans onder
This year, for the first time, OCLC presented its regional council
meeting for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in Cape Town. With
OCLC being the world’s largest library cooperative, this offered an
excellent opportunity for library staff to participate in a unique and
diverse library community building event. The proximity of the meeting
allowed twenty-five library staff members to join the group of 280
representatives from 27 countries.
Inspired by the African proverb “If you want to go fast, go alone, if
you want to go far, go together” the theme of the meeting was "Library
Community in Action: advancing knowledge, collaboration and innovation".
Discussions were aimed to demonstrate how a collaborative approach makes
a difference, raises a library’s profile, changes perceptions, and
simply gets things done. Special emphasis was placed on sharing and
innovation within this context.
Among the excellent presenters was Charles Leadbeater, a renowned
speaker and advisor on innovation. During his talk he emphasised that innovation is not synonymous
with technology, but rather that innovation is often sparked by a new
way of looking at a problem. Equally illuminating, was a talk by Skip
Pritchard, the new President and CEO of OCLC, who shared his thoughts
about the future of the cooperative.
“Lightning talks” of five minutes each created an air of excitement. A
handful of delegates were each allowed five minutes to share their
special projects with the meeting. Presiding over the event, Ms Ellen Tise,
Senior Director of the Library and Information Service, had the pleasant
task of presenting the winner and runners up with monetary awards
towards their project goals.
The Library was also happy to reciprocate OCLC’s hospitality by
hosting an enrichment programme at Stellenbosch University. Forty
delegates originating from various countries took the opportunity to
stroll through our botanical garden, wander at the magnificent art in
the Sasol Art Museum and spend time learning about some of the Library’s
highlights and specialised services.

OCLC SE
STREEKSVERGADERING IN KAAPSTAD
OCLC
wêreld se grootste koöperatiewe biblioteeknetwerk, was dit ‘n
knowledge, collaboration and innovation" is geïnspireer deur die
Afrika-spreekwoord “As jy vinnig wil gaan, gaan alleen, as jy ver wil
gaan, gaan saam”.
Spesiale klem is
net so insiggewend.
In dié
Veertig
gespesialiseerde dienste.
