Although it feels like we are already half way through this year, I would still like to share with you some of the Library’s highlights of 2013. The usage of the Learning Commons in the JS Gericke Library continued to rise and to add value to learning and teaching at the University in 2013. As in previous years, the Carnegie Research Commons was used extensively by masters and doctoral students, making a significant contribution in support of the University’s pursuit of research excellence, increased and sustained research output and improvement of postgraduate through-put. The new Engineering and Forestry Library in the Knowledge Centre of the Faculty of Engineering was officially opened in August 2013. This library with its modern facilities is very popular and usage increased significantly in comparison to the “old library”.

LINA SPIES AND HENNIE AUCAMP COLLECTIONS
The completed catalogues of the collections of celebrated Afrikaans authors Hennie Aucamp and Lina Spies were presented on 5 March 2014 at a prestigious function in the Africana room, JS Gericke Library.

NEW STAFF WELCOMED: ELNA RANDALL
Elna Randall was appointed as Director: Client Services at the Library and Information Service from January 2014. Before coming to Stellenbosch, she was Head of a Faculty Librarian team at the University of Pretoria's Academic and Information Service.

CONTENT ON THE GO - MOBILE ACCESS TO DATABASES!
The use of library resources on mobile devices is becoming more and more popular in our technolo-gically advanced society. These resources range from electronic databases, books and journals.
LIBGUIDES - LIBRARIANS' VIRTUAL PRESENCE
Subject guides (or Libguides as we call them) are created by Faculty Librarians for each department to promote subject-specific resources to the students. A few generic guides are also available.
NEW E-RESOURCES AVAILABLE
In spite of the financial pressure caused by the deteriorating rand, the Library Service still managed this year to subscribe to a number of new databases and other electronic resources. One of the three highlighted here is JoVE.
OCLC EMEA MEETING HELD IN CAPE TOWN
OCLC is the world's largest library cooperative and this year, for the first time, they presented their regional council meeting for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in Cape Town.
RECORD NUMBER NEW STUDENTS AT LIBRARY
Our goal to improve the attendance of the orientation programme for new students each year, was reached in 2014. This year 3 501 students attended the orientation compared to 2 495 students in 2013.
