Wireless network tested in JS Gericke Library

A cordless network system is being tested in the JS Gericke Library to establish the capacity, speed and reliability of, as well as the demand  for, cordless appliances.  The test period will last until approximately the end of November this year.

One cordless network access point has been installed at die general information desk on the upper level of the JS Gericke Library for this purpose.  This access point has a range of between 30 and 50 meter.  This means that anyone can use his/her computer (normal or laptop) within this area without connecting to the network with a cable.

To make use of the cordless facility your computer should have a PCMCIA (cordless network) card.  PCMCIA cards will be available for loan at the Library Computer Department during the test period.  If your computer already has such a card, it should be registered with the Information Technolgy Division.

With cordless network access we endeavour to make library sources more accessible, improve technological flexibility and comply with the growing demand for the use of laptops in the Library.

We encourange all cordless users to try out the facility and also welcome enquiries and feedback.  For this purpose, please contact John Dovey at tel.: 808-4100 or e-mail: pjcd@sun.ac.za
