Secure your research footprint

The Library and Information Service will be presenting its third Library Research Week this year from 11 - 15 May. The aim of the event is to develop the skills and knowledge of emerging Stellenbosch University researchers and postgraduate students and to equip them with practical knowledge of measuring research impact, building their online presence and making them aware of the use of researcher identifiers. ​

Description:

This workshop focuses on bibliometrics for individual researchers, addressing a variety of resources for measuring author impact.  Resources and tools include citation analysis using Scopus and Web of Science, the H-index, and Journal Citation Reports.  Additionally, the workshop will cover emerging ways to measure research impact including Google Scholar Citations and other altmetrics which provide information about the usage and impact of research through social media structures. Issues relating to author visibility, author identity and profiling will also be addressed briefly.

Description:

This lunch hour talk on Bibliometrics, including the different uses and possibilities of bibliometrics, but also the pitfalls will be presented by Prof Johann Mouton. Johann Mouton is Professor in and Director of the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) at Stellenbosch University and the African Doctoral Academy. Johann Mouton is also the Programme Director of five post-graduate programmes in Monitoring and Evaluation Studies and Science and Technology Studies. His main research interests are the philosophy and methodology of the social sciences, higher education knowledge production, sociology of science, scientometrics and science policy studies.

Description:

This two-hour session will be presented by different researchers and students who have a strong online presence in Social Media and other research networking tools such as blogs, webpages, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Scholar profiles, ResearchGate and Mendeley. They will share their expertise on the different uses of these tools, but also discuss topics such as online etiquette for research, what problems might be faced, the importance of online networking for research, etc. Guest speakers include Wiida Fourie-Basson (Science Faculty); Dr John Measey (Centre for Invasion Biology), Laura Jane van Laeren (PhD student in Chemistry) and Riaan Rudman (Lector, School of Accountancy).

Die derde Biblioteek Navorsingsweek word vanjaar vanaf 11 – 15 Mei deur die Biblioteek- en Inligtingsdiens aangebied. Die doel van die week is om die vaardighede en kennis van opkomende navorsers en nagraadse studente van die Universiteit Stellenbosch te ontwikkel en om hul met praktiese kennis toe te rus wat betref die meet van navorsingsimpak, die opbou van ‘n teenwoordigheid in sosiale media en ander webgebaseerde navorsing en hul bewus te maak van die gebruik van unieke navorsingsidentiteite.

Hierdie werkswinkel fokus op bibliometrie vir die individuele navorser deur ‘n verskeidenheid bronne vir die meet van outeursimpak te demonstreer. Hulpbronne en instrumente sluit in sitasie-analise met die hulp van Scopus en Web of Science, die H-indeks, en Journal Citation Reports. Die werkswinkel sal verder ook nuwe maniere om navorsingsimpak te meet aanraak, bv. Google Scholar Citations en ander altmetrics wat inligting verskaf oor die gebruik en impak van navorsing deur sosiale media strukture. Aangeleenthede rakende die sigbaarheid van outeurs, die identiteit van outeurs en die skep van profiele sal ook kortliks aangeraak word.

Hierdie middagete praatjie oor die verskillende gebruike, moontlikhede en risiko’s van bibliometrie word deur Prof Johann Mouton aangebied. Hy is Professor en Direkteur by die Sentrum vir Navorsing oor Evaluasie, Wetenskap en Tegnologie (SENWET) en die Afrika Doktorale Akademie. Johan Mouton is ook die Programdirekteur van vyf nagraadse programme oor Monitoring and Evaluation Studies en Science and Technology Studies.
