Registered honours, masters and doctoral students and staff of Stellenbosch University also have access to the other three university libraries in the Western Cape: Universities of Cape Town, the Western Cape and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. These four libraries form the Cape Higher Education Library Network (CHELiN).

The following provisions, abstracted from the Cape Higher Education Library Network (CHELiN) Reciprocal Access and Borrowing Agreement, apply:
  • Access to CHELiN libraries will be by means of staff and student card, although specific institutions may issue additional library access cards where access is controlled electronically.
  • CHELiN users will abide by the rules of the institution they are visiting.
  • CHELiN users must receive training in the use of the electronic catalogue at their home library (the institution they are registered with).
  • Access to the electronic catalogue is available at your home library.
  • Excluded from the agreement at the University of Cape Town are the Built Environment Library, Bolus Herbarium Library, Hiddingh Hall Library, Institute for Child Health Library and the Music Library.
  • Excluded from the agreement at Stellenbosch University is the Bellville Park Campus Library (USBL).

Borrowing from other Western Cape university libraries

Registered honours, master’s and doctoral students and staff of Stellenbosch University may complete attached form to request a referral letter to present at the other Western Cape university libraries mentioned above in order to apply for borrowing membership. Please return the completed form via e-mail. For enquiries, phone +27 21 808 4883. Circulation staff will complete the Details of Referring Library section on the form and return the form to you to take along to the other CHELiN library.

The following provisions abstracted from the Cape Higher Education Library Network (CHELiN) Reciprocal Access and Borrowing Agreement, apply:
  • CHELiN borrowers will abide by the rules of the institutions they are borrowing from.
  • CHELiN borrowers must apply for and obtain a referral letter from their home library before applying for borrowing membership at a CHELiN library.
  • Home libraries may refuse to issue a referral letter to a CHELiN borrower should they not be prepared to take responsibility for that person’s borrowing due to past delinquencies or behaviour, in which case no application for borrowing membership at CHELiN libraries will be possible.
  • Membership will have to be re-applied for at the start of each academic year.
  • All borrowed items must be returned to the CHELiN library from which they were borrowed.
  • Excluded from the agreement at the University of Cape Town are the Built Environment Library, Bolus Herbarium Library, Hiddingh Hall Library, Institute for Child Health Library and the Music Library.
  • Excluded from the agreement at Stellenbosch University is the Bellville Park Campus Library (USBL).

Borrowing from university libraries in other parts of South Africa 

Stellenbosch University staff and registered masters and doctoral students may complete and submit the electronic form to request a referral letter to present at another university library elsewhere in South Africa. These are, amongst others, the libraries of UNISA and the Universities of Pretoria, Johannesburg, the Witwatersrand, Free State, KwaZulu Natal and Rhodes University.

The following provisions, abstracted from the Memorandum of Understanding of the Committee for Higher Education Librarians of South Africa (CHELSA) apply:
  • Each university library is individually responsible for, and will be expected to provide, core library and information services to all its users from undergraduate to research.
  • Each university library must provide fully for the needs of its own undergraduate as well as pre-masters students.
  • The parties agree to make their libraries available to registered masters and doctoral students; in terms of the conditions specified.
  • The parties further agree to make their libraries available to one another for use by academic and research staff; in terms of the conditions specified.
  • The above does not preclude individual agreements between member libraries.
  • The institutions will deal with occasional visitors in terms of their established policies

Geregistreerde honneurs-, magister- en doktorale studente en personeel van die Universiteit Stellenbosch het ook toegang tot die ander drie universiteitsbiblioteke in die Wes-Kaap: Universiteite van Kaapstad, Wes-Kaapland en die Kaapse Skiereiland Universiteit van Tegnologie. Dié vier biblioteke vorm saam die Cape Higher Education Library Network (CHELiN).

Die volgende voorwaardes, opgesom uit die Cape Higher Education Library Network (CHELiN) Reciprocal Access and Borrowing Agreement, is van toepassing:
  • Toegang tot CHELiN-biblioteke geskied met ’n personeel- of studentekaart, alhoewel sommige instansies, waar toegang elektronies beheer word, bykomende toegangskaarte kan uitreik.
  • CHELiN-gebruikers moet die reëls van die instansie wat hulle besoek, gehoorsaam.
  • CHELiN-gebrukers moet by hul tuisbiblioteek (by die instansie waar hulle geregistreer is) in die gebruik van die elektroniese katalogus opgelei word.
  • Toegang tot die elektroniese katalogus is beskikbaar by elke student se tuisbiblioteek.
  • Die volgende biblioteke van die Universiteit van Kaapstad is uit die ooreenkoms uitgesluit: Built Environment Biblioteek, Bolus Herbarium Biblioteek, Hiddingh Hall Biblioteek, Institute for Child Health Biblioteek en die Musiekbiblioteek.
  • By die Universiteit Stellenbosch is die Bellvilleparkkampusbiblioteek (USBB) uit die ooreenkoms uitgesluit.

Leen van boeke by ander universiteitsbiblioteke in die Wes-Kaap

Geregistreerde honneurs-, magister- en doktorale studente en dosente van die Universiteit Stellenbosch kan aangehegte vorm voltooi om by een van die  universiteitsbiblioteke hierbo genoem aansoek om toelating en uitleenlidmaatskap te doen. Stuur asb. die voltooide vorm via e-pos. Vir navrae, kontak +27 21 808 4883. Bronverskaffingspersoneel sal die Details of Referring Library-gedeelte op die vorm voltooi en die vorm terugstuur sodat die kliënt dit na die ander CHELiN-biblioteek kan saamneem.

Die volgende voorwaardes, opgesom uit die Cape Higher Education Library Network (CHELiN) Reciprocal Access and Borrowing Agreement, is van toepassing:
  • CHELiN-gebruikers moet die reëls van die instansie waar hulle boeke uitleen, gehoorsaam.
  • CHELiN-leners moet 'n verwysingsbrief van hul tuisbiblioteek verkry voordat hulle vir uitleenlidmaatskap by 'n CHELiN-biblioteek aansoek doen.
  • Tuisbiblioteke kan weier om 'n verwysingsbrief aan 'n CHELiN-lener uit te reik indien die biblioteek, weens vorige oortredings of gedrag, nie bereid is om verantwoordelikheid te aanvaar vir daardie persoon se lening nie. In so 'n geval is 'n aansoek tot uitleenlidmaatskap by CHELiN-biblioteke nie moontlik nie.
  • Uitleenlidmaatskap is slegs geldig vir die akademiese jaar waarvoor CHELiN-leners by hul tuisinstansies geregistreer is, of slegs vir die huidige akademiese jaar. Daar moet dus aan die begin van elke akademiese jaar weer vir lidmaatskap aansoek gedoen word.
  • Alle uitgeleende items moet aan die CHELiN-biblioteek waar dit uitgeleen is, terugbesorg word.
  • Die volgende biblioteke van die Universiteit van Kaapstad is uit die ooreenkoms uitgesluit: Built Environment Biblioteek, Bolus Herbarium Biblioteek, Hiddingh Hall Biblioteek, Institute for Child Health Biblioteek en die Musiekbiblioteek.
  • By die Universiteit Stellenbosch is die Bellvilleparkkampusbiblioteek (USBB) uit die ooreenkoms uitgesluit.

Toegang tot & die leen van boeke by Suid-Afrikaanse universiteitsbiblioteke buite die Wes-Kaap

Geregistreerde magister- en doktorale studente en dosente van die Universiteit Stellenbosch kan elektronies aansoek doen om ’n toestemmingsbrief om by ’n universiteitsbiblioteek buite die Wes-Kaap aansoek om toelating en uitleenvoorregte te doen. Hierdie biblioteke is onder andere dié van UNISA en die Universiteite van Pretoria, Johannesburg, die Witwatersrand, Vrystaat, Rhodes en KwaZulu-Natal.
