Undergraduate Students

Lending privileges

Undergraduate students may borrow 6 items for 2 weeks and may renew each item twice, unless someone else has requested the item. See How do I renew my books?.

Items may be returned to the JS Gericke Library and any branch library of the Library and Information Service.  See "Accessible libraries".

Reserving of books is free of charge and unlimited.  See How do I reserve a book?.

Fines are charged for overdue books at 50c per item per day. The fine limit is R20-00.  Lending privileges are suspended when this limit has been exceeded.

If an item has been lost or damaged, the replacement value will be payable to the Library and Information Service.

Material available for loan

All library material is available for loan, excluding journals, reference material, B.Th. theses, Bible commentaries, music recordings, sound recordings, music videos, vinyl recordings, music CDs and items marked "Not for loan" and "Restricted".

Accessible libraries

All libraries of the Library and Information Service are accessible to all students. These are: the JS Gericke Library, Engineering and Forestry Library, Theology Library, Music Library (Stellenbosch), Health Sciences Library (Tygerberg) and USBI (Bellvillepark Campus Information Centre).

Access

Access control at the JS Gericke Library and branch libraries requires swiping a valid student card. Students who do not have their student card on their person will be allowed inside, subject to identification with a valid identification document. 

Photocopying

Facilities are provided at the Read Me Services (RMS) photocopying facility, JS Gericke Library or at the lending desks of the branch libraries. Staff and student cards must be used for photocopying.

Computer printouts

All printers in the library are connected to the SafeCom printing system.  All printouts may therefore be collected at any SafeCom printer on campus by using your student card. 

Library orientation and information services

Library orientation and assistance with or training in retrieving information are provided by faculty and branch librarians. To arrange a session, please consult the faculty and branch librarians list for contact details.

Internet

The Library and Information Service provides free access on campus to all its subscription internet resources and/or to those resources available on its website (amongst others, e-databases and e-journals).  General websites such as Google are not available free of charge and requires opening a NXInetkey to gain access. 

Wireless access 

Wireless access (wi-fi) is available in the JSG Gericke Library and all the branch libraries for laptops registered for use on Stellenbosch University campus. Information and directions in this regard are available at How do I?

Electronic resources

Access to a multitude of electronic resources is provided by means of SUNSearch, the search function on the library's homepage.  This search box provides collective access to the Library's e-resources collection. However, researchers engaged in in-depth research are advised to search also by means of the individual e-resources listed under the Search heading on the library homepage.

Off-campus access to e-resources

All electronic resources offered by the Library and Information Service are available from home or office computers, your laptop or mobile phone.  Information on how to apply for off-campus access to the library's e-resources is available at How do I?

Information services

Consultations for research requirements and related information retrieval are offered by faculty or branch librarians. To arrange a session, please consult the faculty and branch librarians list for contact details.

Interlibrary loans

Material not available in any of the libraries of the Library and Information Service may be loaned from other libraries in the country or even abroad. Find more information at Interlibrary loans.

Off-campus document delivery

Library material can be sent to students not residing on campus and who are prepared to pay for the service. Find more information at Off-campus document delivery.

Venue bookings

Seminar rooms in the JS Gericke Library and the Learning Commons are available for discussion and group work.
