Lending privileges
Lecturers (full-time as well as part-time) may borrow 30 items for 3 months and renew these twice, unless another client has requested the item.
Administrative staff may borrow 15 items for 4 weeks and renew these twice, unless another client has requested the item.
Items may be returned to the JS Gericke Library or any branch library.
Reserving of books is free of charge and unlimited.
- The replacement value of lost or damaged items is payable to the Library and Information Service.
Material available for loan
All library material is available for loan, excluding journals, reference material, B.Th. theses, Bible commentaries, music recordings, sound recordings, music videos, vinyl recordings, music CDs and items marked “Not for loan” and “Restricted”.
Accessible libraries
All libraries of the Library and Information Service are included in membership privileges. These are: JS Gericke Library, Engineering and Forestry Library, Theology Library, Music Library (Stellenbosch), Medicine & Health Sciences Library (Tygerberg) and USBI (Bellvillepark Campus Information Centre).
Access
Access control at the JS Gericke Library and USBI requires swiping a valid staff card at the entrance of the Library.
Photocopying
Staff identity cards are used to make photocopies.
Computer printouts
Each computer is connected to the SafeCom-printing system. Printing can thus be collected from any SafeCom printer by means of an SU identity card.
Library orientation and training
Library orientation and training are provided by faculty and branch librarians. To arrange a session, please consult the lists of
faculty and branch librarians for contact details or consult the
training and events calendar to see which training sessions are scheduled for every month of the year. Book a specific training event or consult the
group training programme to see a list of all training sessions available for specific target groups.
Internet
The Library and Information Service provides free access to all the internet resources to which it subscribes and/or makes available on its website (amongst others
e-databases and
e-journals). General websites such as Google are not available free of charge and requires opening a NXInetkey.
Search for books and articles
Electronic resources
Access to a multitude of electronic resources is provided by means of
SUNSearch, the search function on the library home page. However, researchers engaged in in-depth research are advised to search by means of the individual e-resources listed under the Search heading on the
library homepage.
Off-campus access
All electronic resources offered by the Library and Information Service are also available from home or office computers. A network username and password are needed to sign on.

Research and information retrieval consultations are offered by faculty or branch librarians. To arrange a session, please consult the

Interlibrary loans
Items not available in any library of the US Library and Information Service may be obtained from another library in the country or even from overseas. More information is available from
