Our collections

The Library and Information Service holds a large collection of books, monographs, journals, newspapers,
sheet music, microforms, sound recordings, other audio-visual items, computer readable sources of
information and a large number of electronic resources. Most of these sources can be accessed via
the Search menu.

Sources of information for the vast majority of subject fields are housed in the JS Gericke Library with
the natural and agricultural sciences and law collections as well as government publications on the
upper level and the social sciences and arts and humanities collections on the lower level of the library.

Sources which cover subjects that are served by branch and satellite libraries and departmental
collections are most likely to be found at these libraries. A list of subjects with details of the faculty librarians who are responsible for them is provided at the faculty librarians' contact page.

Frequently used journal titles from the JS Gericke Library collection are kept in the short loans section
located on the upper level of the JS Gericke Library and the latest issues of local newspapers in the
reading area opposite the Circulation desk on the upper level of the JS Gericke Library.  Discontinued
and cancelled journal titles are stored, together with earlier issues of newspapers, in the compact
storage area and may be requested from staff members at the service desk. Certain journals and back
issues of some South African newspapers are available on microfilm and are obtainable at the compact
storage service desk.

Full-text electronic journals and electronic databases are accessible from the Search menu.

Access to all full-text journals are restricted to staff members and registered students of the University.

Multimedia CD ROMs are available from the general information desk on the lower level of the
JS Gericke Library. There is a computer available for this purpose.

Stellenbosch University dissertations from 1976 to 2000 as well as dissertations of a few other
South African universities on microfiche are also available at the compact storage service desk.
Some dissertations on microfiche which cover subjects served by the branch and satellite libraries
are most likely to be found at these libraries. Please direct enquiries directly to the relevant library.
Some dissertations before 2000 and most dissertations from 2000 to 2008 are available electronically
Since 2009 all dissertations are only available electronically.

Other collections at the Library and Information Service include Special Collections, departmental collections, Government Publications and Domus.
