Obtain off-campus access

You need to be enrolled for the current academic year at Stellenbosch University in order to obtain off-campus access to the library's e-resources.

According to the academic licencing conditions of the subscription electronic resources of the Library and Information Service, only network registered students and staff members of the University are entitled to off-campus access to these electronic resources.

The Library and Information Service has no mandate to execute registrations for off-campus access. Off-campus access to the Library and Information Service’s e-resources fall under the registration for standard electronic services for network access on the SU campus and is the responsibility of the Information Technology Division of the University.

The following network registration options are available:

Undergraduate and Postgraduate students

Undergraduates and postgraduates are automatically registered for all standard electronic services (network access) as soon as they have registered on campus as SU student on campus.

After network registration undergraduates and postgraduates obtain network access to the computers of the Computer User Areas (RGAs) and the Library, access to WebCT, webmail, the internet (via their personal Inetkey), as well as off-campus access to the Library’s e-resources and My Library Account with their campus username and password.

Prospective postgraduate students

If submission of a research proposal is required for your final admission as a postgraduate student at Stellenbosch University, please follow the 3 steps below in order to obtain off-campus access to the Library's electronic resources:

  1. Apply online as a prospective postgraduate student to Stellenbosch University. How do I apply online?

  2. Once your online application process as a prospective postgraduate student is finalised, you will receive an e-mail from University's Admission Office providing you with a SU username and temporary password.

  3. Thereafter you have to change your temporary password to create your own campus password in order to get off-campus access to the library's e-resources: Change password

Please note: Prospective postgraduate students will only gain off-campus access to the Library’s e-resources with their own personal SU campus username and password after their online application process as a prospective postgraduate student is finalised.

After acceptance of your proposal and registration as as a postgraduate student at Stellenbosch University, you will automatically be registered for all standard electronic services for network access (see: Undergraduate and postgraduate students).

Staff

SU Staff network accounts are normally managed by the departmental secretary you are affiliated with.

SU staff members (with a SU UT number) may submit an online application for standard electronic services (network access) at network request.

Visiting or External staff members

Academic departments/other divisions on campus may choose to register visiting or external staff members (with a SU UT number) at their particular department/division for standard electronic services (network access) under their cost centre at network request.

Important: Visiting or external staff member must have a SU number and job description before registration can take place. Staff member's SU number are issued by Human Resources:

Cost

The cost of an external staff member/visitor or staff member’s network registration will be debited to the cost centre of the particular academic department/other division on campus. The cost centre to be used for network registration must be provided by the academic department/other division (in most instances the administrative officer of the department/division will be able to provide this).

After network registration staff members will obtain access to the computers of the Library and Information Service, webmail, the internet (via their Inetkey, if they have been registered for internet access on the SU campus) and will also have off-campus access to the Library’s electronic resources and My Library Account with their campus username and password.
