The Library and Information Service invites you to our next Book Talk: Sonja Loots in conversation with Floris van der Merwe.

Sonja’s book Sirkusboere (2011) was inspired by Die boere-sirkus van St. Louis (1904), published in 1998 by Floris van der Merwe. It tells the story of circus owner Frank Fillis who took the Boer War Spectacle to the St Louis World Fair in America in 1904. Sirkusboere has received, among others, the M-Net Literary Award and the Eugene Marais Prize.

Sirkusboere is Sonja’s second book after Spoor (1995). Floris is a retired SU professor of Sport Science and renowned for his research and writings on sport history, e.g. Matieland is rugbyland, 1980-2006, Sport en spel in die boerekrygsgevangenekampe tydens die Anglo-Boereoorlog, 1899-1902 en Die Helleense erfenis: oorsprong en program van die antieke Olimpiese Spele.
